Many people would like to support local farms and eat locally, but they believe that it is not possible unless they live in a rural farmland setting. Not to worry, you can step out of your highrise condo or suburban McMansion and have farm fresh foods nearby.
Organizations are popping up to bring the farm raised goods closer to consumers. Fair Food Philly is one of those non profit organizations that networks with growers and sets up a farm stand in downtown Philadelphia. Not only is the food often fresher, but nothing compares to the depth of flavor that you get when something hand picked or hand raised actually ends up on your table. You might have to pay a bit more, but you know that your money is going to support the local agriculture and not a company on a separate continent. Purchasing food in this manner also affords you the opportunity to talk to the growers and really learn about the food that you are purchasing, the food that they often lovingly raise from seed to fruit. This is a community connection that you will not get at your local Shop Rite.
I challenge you to seek out a local option and just visit. Take it in a little, and then decide how you'd like to shop.
